A few other signs include an unusual hot sensation felt on the cabin floor or even a distinct burning smell. The burning smell means excessive heat is reaching and melting nearby rubber or plastic components.
When these symptoms occur, a driver’s first step should be to visibly check for any corrosion, loose mounting bolts, or even sagging of the shield material. Oftentimes, the shield will come loose due to vibration or rust eating through a thin metal located close to the fastener points. The shield can sometimes be reattached for minor issues. However, a complete heat shield replacement is the safest long-term option.
